OK, so I had to have one. Sure I own or have owned most of the premium fly reels manufactured. This is a pretty reel...jewelry for a rod. I first built a fiberglass (yes fiberglass) 4 weight flyrod for it. The outfit looked pretty next to the first trout taken with it. I've since put it on another 4 weight flyrod. It's a special reel.

I have a 4 + for my 5 wt and a 3 plus for my 4 weight. I have this in the black. all the other hatches I have are silver with varying color. The black is really nice. A suble black not super glossy but fits well and great finish. No fault drag and great sound. Balances well with newer and older 4wt. My favorite 4 wt reel.

OK. So all a reel does is hold line on a rod. True. But who doesn't want to own a piece of art every once and while (or a few times). Bonus if that reel NEVER needs maintenance! I own three HATCH Finatic+ reels. 3+, 4+, 5+ My 3+ silver is a happy union of function and form. Beautiful to behold and use. Very smooth drag and start up. A single machined piece of aluminum used for the reel and reel foot is genius—no screws to foul or maintain and it's rock solid. The oversized knurled drag knob is welcome when you're wearing gloves in cold weather. These reels are a bit heavy to pair with super light high end rods. My 3+ finatic balances very well with my Helios ZG 5wt. These reels will last forever, destined to be heirlooms. Only wish they offered individual numbers on these, but I understand that's saved for the limited edition runs—looking forward to getting one of those one day. I doubt I'll get a 1+ for a light brookie rod— a click'n'paw fits that order. And while HATCH reels may be overkill for our Virginia mid to large stockers and browns (14-24"era), the reels are still a joy to have and use. When I get a 8 or 9 weight for musky and light saltwater, I'll be looking at a HATCH.
