The first time I used one of these things was on a tributary to the Raritan in NJ. The fly hit the water and began to sink, before it could get six inches below the film a 5lb rainbow crushed it. Who knew NJ had trout? Impressed, the first fly I try on the Lewis River in WA a month or so later is a Olive Meat Whistle, first cast a 10 lb rainbow snaps off the 4x tippet before I can bow to him. Moral of the stories - meat whistles work & it's not a bad idea to have stouter tippet on hand despite whatever the pencil necks in the fly shop recommend.
